Just left the Armed Forces? Registering with a GP for the first time in long time? Don’t worry, this guide will provide a simple explanation to GP services and how to use them.
Registrations – you need to complete a Registration Form which you can do online here or in person at the practice. Please ask for the forms at the front desk. You will also be asked for very basic details of your Service History – your date of joining and leaving along with your Service Number. This is so we can update your medical record to show you are a Veteran.
Prescriptions – you need to order your medications and give the practice 48 hours notice to process them (not including weekends or public holidays). You also need to give your Pharmacy around 2 – 3 days to dispense the medication. You can order medications by contacting us online here, or calling our 24 hour prescription line on 01506 440023.
We normally process the prescription and this is then sent to your Pharmacy of choice in the local area. If you do not provide us a Pharmacy, we will automatically forward this to Boots, The Mall in Craigshill.
Your Pharmacy will then provide you with the medications.
Prescriptions in Scotland are free at the point of contact.
Appointments – There is a shortage of GPs in the country and access to a GP appointment can be very frustrating for many as demand is much higher than supply overall. We have a full compliment of GPs and other Allied Health Professionals however and operate an on the day system. This is when you call first thing in the morning for an appointment that day. We do not provide ‘walk in clinics’ similar to Sickbays in Military Establishments.
We have a Practice Mental Health Nurse who works Mondays and Fridays. If you have an acute need for MH Support, please ask for an appointment.
An Advanced Physio Practitioner is also based in the practice on Thursdays. They provide the assessment and referral to further treatment if necessary.
Signposting – our reception staff are trained to signpost. This means they will ask for a brief description of your symptoms when booking an appointment. This is at the request of the GP and patient confidentiality is maintained at all times. Reception may signpost you to another healthcare provider. This allows you to be seen by the right person at the right time.
Pharmacy First – this is a service free of charge as long as you are registered with a GP. You can attend a Pharmacy with a wide range of symptoms and can be treated without an appointment. The medication is free at the point of contact. For more information, please click here.
